Hola a todos
Hi all,
I'm sure a lot of you have already seen in internet and in contests the machine build and painted by Carlos Pelaez (Radicarlos) and Sergio Torregimeno (Bijou) based in the great game from Soda Pop. Here it is a complete report about how it was made our first project : Super Dungeon Explore Machine:
La idea / The concept
The
project was born in 2014, after a dinner, 3 friends decided to assist
to the Monte San Savino Show 2015, a legendary painting contest in
Italy. As this contest is so special, we want to make a modelism
project more complex and bigger than a usual one. Some other ideas
were in the table that night, but finally we decided to develope the
Super Dungeon Explore idea.
As
Soda Pop takes the videogame into a board game, we decided to make
just the opposite! Using the
miniatures from the game, we planned to build a arcade
machine for Super Dungeon Explore miniatures.
The arcade machine
should have buttons, joystick and all the details, and inside the
screen will be different scenes (one for each hero), and the player
could change it using the buttons.
Although
the project born from three members, as a collaboration project,
finally only two could participate, so the project was built by
Carlos Pelaez (Radicarlos) and Sergio Torregimeno (Bijou), helped by
Jose Maria Conde (Josechu) in the electric parts and by Raul
Guilabert in the printing part.
Bocetos / Sketches
As all painting projects, the first step is sketching the diferent parts of the machine.
As all painting projects, the first step is sketching the diferent parts of the machine.
Is
very important have this sketches because they will be very helpful
for preparing other phases as building and mounting.

We
decided to divide the project in two parts:
-
The machine box
-
The 6 hero scenes
The scketches for this scene were this ones, although they were changed afterwards:
The
six scenes will turn each time a player press the select button,
inside the “screen”. The machine, will be as a small arcade
machine (about 50cm height) made by wood, and detailed using
painting, vinyls, miniatures and other elements.

To
make more easy the painting of the scenes, we decide to build each
scene in a separated piece.
The machine has to be a small replica of an arcade game machine, of about 50cm height, that contains a disk with all the scenes. The buttons will allow to the user change the scene (select hero). The machine would have a back panel that can be removed for put inside the rotating mechanism and for changing the batteries.

We
made a complete map with all details and size of each side of the
machine:
Ahorrareis mucho tiempo y disgustos.
This schetck has been very useful, because it allow us to cut all the pieces with precision. I encourage you to make this map in a big project and made cardboard prototypes. It will spare time and waste of time.

Each
scene will have it's own hero scene.
This scene was build for the charapter "Dragon Priest". Although this character is in the evil side, we love the miniature so much that we decided to put it into the project. The idea was to put it inside a lab making creepy invocations.
The graveyard
This
scene is for the character "Riftling Rogue" a vampire look girl. We
will create a creepy ambientance for this scene located in a graveyard,
full of crows and rats!
The scketch was very simple, but it allow us to think about the elements that we need to search and build by ourselves:
The frost cave
This
scene was designed for the pair of characters called "Angry bear" and
"Deeproot Druid". Together are more funny so we decided to put them
outside a frozen cave, taking advantage of the white tones.
So we again make a very simple scketch for the scene:
The larder
castillo.
Esta escena will be for the dwarft of the game "HearthsWorn Fighter". It will be in a larder full of tonels and another objects, inside a castle.
Los bocetos para esta escena son estos:
The scketches were this ones:
The doom
This scene was build for the charapter "Dragon Priest". Although this character is in the evil side, we love the miniature so much that we decided to put it into the project. The idea was to put it inside a lab making creepy invocations.

The throne room
alrededor. Algunas banderas adornarian las paredes.
This
scene was for the "Royal Paladin" miniature. It will be ambient in a
throne room, with a big throne and some treasures around. Some banners
also will be put in the walls.
Los bocetos para esta escena fueron estos:
The scketches were this ones:
The sky path
The
last scene was for the Sorceress "HexCast". We thought it inside a
forest at the beginning, but after some changes, we thought that she
could be in a sky path.
The scketches for this scene were this ones, although they were changed afterwards:
Otros bocetos / Other scketches
We also made a lot of scketches of the main border design. They
was made in 1:1 scale for helping in the buildiing phase:
As
you can see for making scketches of our work, doesn't mean we have to be
good drawers, but it will help us to locate objects in the scene and in
the building phase for don't forget any detail.
Building the
machine
Primeramente,
First
of all, using the machine maps scketches with the measures of each
part, we built a prototype in cardboard:
This
prototype allow us to have a real reference (1:1) of the final model and is
very useful for building the different wood parts of the definitive
machine, and also for finding and designing the transport box:
We paint in black inside the machine:
We also use 2mm plasticard for build the showcase and the panels for the machine:
Electric parts
The machine needed an electric mechanism that could pass from a scene to another one each time a button were pressed, stopping in the center of itself.
The electric parts were developed by Jose Maria Conde, a friend oif us, that adapts a exhibition plate from cochesdemetal.com for our porpuose.

He installed a stop sensor and added buttons to the machine:
Al the system uses a D type battery:
We made the holes for the buttons and the joystick:
With all this work finished the box is ready to be decorated and we have to build the scenes for each hero.Construyendo las escenas / Building the scenes
Each
scene has its own ambient. Depending on the miniature, we decided to
create a scene.
The graveyard
Usando
Using the vampire looking girl miniature, we create a graveyard
scene, with crows, rats in a night time ilumination:
We added some sarcophagus in the main view to put the hero elevated from the ground.
The sides of the scene will be painted with a landscape of the moon and a relief of crosses and simulating the graveyard limits.
The frost cave
We create an iced cave from scratch, using diferent materials as
water plaster. The cave was designed for the bear and child
miniature:
conjunto.
For
building the cave we built the main volumes using das putty. When
dried, we apply liquid plaster (also used for prepare oil canvas), to
give smoothness to the cave.
The
bear and the child will take a lot of space in the entrance of the
cave, so we don't have to build more details for this scene.
The pantry
Using the dwarf miniature, we build a pandry full of tonels, sacks
and things like that:
For
this we use elements for decoration from trades as tiny tales, resina
planet and kromlech. The shields of the walls are from scibor dwarfs
set.
The doom
heroes.
This is a special scene, because the main character is an evil
hero. We love the evil priest miniature so we decided to include it
in the rolling scene.
In
this scene we want to build a lava style ground, something viscous, and
over this liquid a dome full of evil books. For decorate it we use
skulls, books, candles and furnitures from tiny tales and kromlech
mainly. Also we add a chain to give a creepy touch.
The throne room
This scene was the first one that we built, creating the throne
from scratch and some GW pieces. Also we use some green stuff for the
carpet and lateral banners:
The sky path
The miniature of this scene represent a mage girl, walking in a
sky path, surrounded by diferent console characters:
Gracias!
The
funny characters were modeled by Carlos girlfriend using milliput. She
is a great pastry cook so she already have done things like that using
fondand.
Clouds where made using cotton and the earth pieces using cork.
Now all is ready to be painted! :)
The Frame
The
main frame that decorates the "screen" of the machine, was made using
2mm plasticard. We cut the frame and we glue a border also made by
square plasticard following the initial design. Also we use miniature
bases to put some little dragons inside. The upper label is also made
using plasticard.
Ya tenemos todo para pintar! :)Now all is ready to be painted! :)
Painting the machine
Although
the machine is made in wood, is recovered with plasticard panels of
3mm. The lateral sides and the button panel will be covered with Soda
Pop draws ilustrations, while the main frame will be decored with hand
made details or freehand paints. Also we will add the dragons miniatures
in all over the frame and we will put the biggest dragon on the top to
give more spectacularity to the box:
The
frame were painted in gold using metal non metal effect, and the
freehands were inspirated in the red dragons miniatures. We use red and
violet mainly, to complement the red tones in the box (red).
posible:
The
main logo at the top with the Super Dungeon Explore name was made
freehand very slowly, copying the original draw in the box:
We
use vallejo and scale colors for painting all the frame. For the MNM
gold we use the following scale of colors (vallejo model serie):
- blanco/white
- amarillo hielo/ice yellow
- amarillo mate/matt yellow
- marron naranja/brown orange
- marron chocolate/brown chocolate
- negro/black
We have applied lights and shadows symmetrically
in both sides to give a coherent effect to the frame. It has more than
50 gradients for the gold mnm. This work were very tedious. After
we made the degrees we outline all in shadows and lights.
The button panel also contains a plasticard frame painted in mnm gold using the same colors.
The frame painting process took more than 2 months from the begining and it is one of the last pieces finished in the project.
Painting the Scenes
Here you are some photos of the painting process of several scenes of the machine.
The graveyard
The
graveyard scene is ambiented in a night with full moon. We decided to
use violet and blue tones because they are cold colors. Also we simulate
the night painting a freehand in one side with the moon and some bats.
The
animal eyes were painted in red to give them a creepy style. All the
scene and elements were painted adding violet and black to give it a
nightly atmosphere.
The frost cave
In
the cave we have used airbrush with light blue and dark blue tones for
the deeper parts. At the end we smooth the paint using some pure white.
We add some artificial snow and some leaves in the ground and added some
icicles at the entrance using nilon and water effect from vallejo:
The pantry
Nuestro
plata:
Our
dwarf at the beginning will be in a treasure room, but at the end we
put him inside a pantry, inside a castle. For painting the miniature we
use orange tones and mnm gold and silver. We use vallejo model color
paints for all the parts:
siempre).
For
the room, we use gray colors for the walls from the scale mnm and the
ground was painted using orange brown from vallejo. When the base dried,
we made a brown wash using vallejo wash to enhance the tiles. The
ground stones had to be gradient one by one, while the tiles didn't need
something more. The wall shields were painted as mnm gold using the
same recipe of colors as in the frame.
The doom
An
evil mage is the main character in this scene. We decided to use green
colors for give a magic touch to the scene. The main character and the
walls and objects have a green glaze to unify the green light in the
doom.
(air color).
The
walls were painted as in other scenes using the scale75 mnm gray
colors. Green colors used are from vallejo airbrush set (air color).
The throne room
This
room contains a throne done from scratch using plasticard and GW pieces
and from another brands. For painting the walls we use scale75 gray mnm
set again, and we use vallejo colors for the rest of the objects.
Añadimos algunos baules a la escena:
We add some vaults to the scene:
The sky path
La protagonista fue pintada tambien con colores de vallejo model:This scene counts with co-protagonist with some pets modeled by Carlos girlfriend. They were painted following the classic videogames. The mage were painted using vallejo model paintings:

Balance
The best / lo mejor
- Make the dream come true, go to Monte San Savino with a different miniature from another all in the contest. Enjoy the trip by car of nearly 4000 km was an unforgettable experience.
- Build so many elements by ourselves. Is great when a miniature is not only painted by you, is created by you!
- Beyond medals and contests, the most important for us is the recognition of other painters. A lot of people had congratulated us for the machine (childs, adults, painters...) and that is the best prize for our effort. Thanks for your recognition.
- Be remembered as the arcade-game guys.
- Get over so long chanllege without giving up. In such long time projects is hard not to give up (and throw the machine through the window....)
- See the final result: when something is just a dream and it cames true in the reality.... is increible!
- All the moments lived because of the machine shared with friends and family! :)
The worst / lo peor
- Maybe we subestimate the effort to build this project. We aren't professional painters, so we have dedicated ALL our free time in last year to this project. If you make something similar, be realist with your possibilities about time and don't be very optimistic to avoid hassles.
- We would want to invert more time in some details, but we couldn't. As usual, we have to stop sometime!
- The plasticard carpentry IS NOT easy :(
- Coordinate so many things to do.
Thanks!
This project takes about a year of our lifes so we are very proud of it because is a part of us. Is true that maybe it could be done carefully and more detailed, but we are very happy of the final resutl because its very close as we imagine it. It's hard mantain the motivation in such a big and long work but at the end all efforts were worth it.
